This is Wanti the Camel. She used to live out in the desert near Parnngurr. Some people found her out in the desert and brought her into Parnngurr. In Parnngurr there are a lot of dogs. When Wanti was all along, the dogs would come and bite her.
One day Trish and all the kids when up to where she was staying and gave her some water and brought her to the school so she would be safe from the dogs.
She had a big, deep cut in her back leg that was pretty nasty looking. She was also very hungry.

Wound

This is the wound on her back leg… In the wound there was lots of pus and maggots. This is one of the many maggots that we got out of her leg.
Wanti

We decided to call the Camel Wanti. Wanti means girl in Martu Wangka
Cleaning the wound

Using a siringe with salty water, we had to clean out the wound twice a day.
At first we used a bandage to keep the flies out. Later we got some purple spay from the vet and some antibiotics.
Feeding

Wanti was missing the milk from her mother. Nyabaru sent some calf milk in on the mail plane.
Wanti needed milk to make her strong. She is still only 2 months old and needs to drink from a bottle.
Wanti goes to town

Wanti’s leg was still not getting better. She could still fit in the troopie. We put her in the back and took her to town to see the vet.
The vet helped make her wound better.
Camel in town

Trish and Wanti staying in Newman for a week while they both got better. Wanti really liked the washing.
New home
Wanti was still a little camel that could easily be moved. She need to have a needle with atibiotics and looked after for a while. A camel place in Broome said that they would look after wanti and they had other baby camels that she could play with. So Trish and Nicky took Wanti to Hedland to met the people from Broome. Wanti now lives in Broome.
